Grassington

Becoming Darrowby
Grassington's cobbled market square and 18th-century stone shopfronts have made it the location for fictional Darrowby in the Channel 5 remake of All Creatures Great and Small — the cycle shop, the bookseller, the grocer's, and Skeldale House itself are all real Grassington buildings temporarily re-signed for filming. (The interior pub scenes are actually filmed a few miles away at the genuine 13th-century Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw, near Hawes — not in Grassington itself.) The original 1970s BBC series used a different village, Askrigg in Wensleydale, for the same fictional town, so long-time fans of the earlier adaptation may find themselves looking for Darrowby in the wrong dale entirely.
The lead-mining moor above the village
Grassington Moor, immediately above the village, was a major lead-mining centre from the 17th century through to the industry's collapse in the late 1800s, and the moor is still scattered with genuine ruins — smelt mill flues, hushes (artificial gullies cut by controlled flash floods to expose ore), and shaft mounds. It's an easy, waymarked walk from the village and one of the better places in the Dales to see real industrial archaeology rather than just farmland and scenery.
A base for Wharfedale
Grassington sits in Upper Wharfedale, and makes a practical base for walks further up the dale to Kilnsey Crag (a huge overhanging limestone outcrop popular with climbers) and Kettlewell, or for the shorter riverside loop along the River Wharfe itself, past Linton Falls just south of the village.
Practical notes
Grassington has no railway station of its own — the nearest is Skipton, roughly nine miles south, connected by a regular bus service. The village gets noticeably busier on filming-tour weekends since the 2020 series aired; visiting outside peak summer weekends gives a much closer look at an actual working Dales village rather than a set.
