About Edge & Beck

Why this site exists

Most guides to this corner of England pick either the Peak District or the Yorkshire Dales, or fold both into a single vague "Pennines" write-up without engaging with what actually makes them different. Edge & Beck exists to cover both on their own terms — one built from dark gritstone edges, the other from pale limestone dales — and to be specific about real distances, real opening situations, and real practical trade-offs rather than atmospheric description alone.

How this was put together

Every place covered on this site was checked against current, publicly available sources rather than written from memory or general impression — reservation systems, closures, and historical details (the Pen-y-ghent Café's 2018 closure, the real dates around the Kinder Scout mass trespass, the Bakewell pudding's disputed origin story) were specifically verified rather than assumed. Where a detail is disputed or uncertain in the historical record — as with parts of the Bakewell pudding story — that uncertainty is stated rather than smoothed over into a single tidy version.

What this site does and doesn't cover

This is a planning and orientation guide — real places, real distances, real seasonal and access information, and one interactive tool for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge's pace. It is not a live conditions service: it does not track real-time weather, live parking availability, or live trail closures, and none of its figures should be treated as a substitute for checking the relevant national park authority, National Trust, or attraction's own current information before you travel. It also carries no accommodation booking, no advertising placements for specific operators, and no gambling-adjacent content of any kind.

Independence

Edge & Beck is an independently produced guide. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of the Peak District National Park Authority, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, the National Trust, or any business named on this site.
